BASKETBALL PROGRAM

INTRODUCTION

Woodville High School Basketball Program was first established in 2016. Basketball plays an integral role in impacting and developing students as individuals and caters for success on and off the court. Woodville High School offers the Basketball program to install self belief among its students in a positive and safe learning environment. Students receive elite coaching and assistance in allowing for students to achieve their personal goals, such as gaining selection in a State and/or Australian team. The program is currently in the process of competing in State and National School Championships. Ultimately, the program allows an effective pathway for students through their high school journey, making them readily available for employment opportunities and tertiary study post school.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Basketball program is conducted by our program director, Ryan Vivian, in partnership with district clubs, communities and state sporting organisations. The program outlines student-athlete development, with a primary focus on Basketball, along with strength and conditioning. It includes individual and technique analysis, skill development, nutrition needs and overall personal development. Practical lessons are based in the state of the art venue in St Clair Recreation Centre. As of 2022 the program is offered to years 7-11, with a pathway to senior Physical Education and Sport & Recreation.

AIM

The program aims to provide student-athletes an appropriate Basketball and academic pathway with a total of 205 minutes per week each year to assist throughout their high school journey.

Content such as practical and theory focuses include: data, game-sense, individual and technique analysis, personal and skill development, fitness and nutrition needs, coaching and umpiring accreditation and self reflection.

We provide students the opportunity to work heavily with their peers (from all years), demonstrating good student-athlete habits through effective role modelling and in giving back to the community.

PROBATION & STANDARDS OF THE PROGRAM

Here at Woodville High School, we hold our Basketball Program students to high standards of results and performances across all subject areas ensuring that all of our student-athletes meet appropriate expectations.

These are measured across 3 key areas:
Academic
Behaviour
Practical

Academic: student-athletes need to demonstrate a positive attitude in all subjects, punctuality to all lessons (given extreme circumstance), satisfactory work ethic and to meet and complete all work by the given deadline.
Behaviour: student-athletes need to demonstrate respect to all staff, peers and school property, as well as display selfless behaviours. Students must make every attempt to follow basic school rules and expectations, including positive role modelling and upholding the school values to a high standard. Our students are to not be receiving any of the following: referrals, internal and/or external suspensions nor have to be questioned by the teacher.
Practical: student-athletes need to demonstrate above satisfactory ability for performance and improvements on and off the court. Students must meet the expectations for attendance to all lessons and in being on time, participation in all practical activities at the standard expected, 100% compliance of staff, leadership in setting the standards (and in positive role modelling) and show a positive attitude, as well as willingness to improve.
*Removal from the Basketball Program may result at the discretion of the Program Director.
