Digital Learning Device Programs

This program empowers students to lead their learning by integrating personal devices into the classroom. Bring your own Device (BYOD)

Woodville High School operates a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program to support students in developing digital skills and maintaining access to learning resources both at school and at home.

Choosing a Device

We recognise that purchasing a laptop is a significant investment for families. For this reason, we provide both a recommended device and a budget-friendly alternative.

Recommended Device

Our recommended device for 2026 is the Apple MacBook Air M4 or M5, with the following specifications:

  • 16GB RAM
  • 256GB SSD storage
  • AppleCare+ (recommended for extended coverage)

As Woodville High School is predominantly an Apple-based school, the MacBook Air provides the best overall experience and performance for students throughout their years at school. It offers greater capability for demanding senior subjects, faster connectivity for external devices, support for multiple external displays, and additional convenience features such as a backlit keyboard, Touch ID, MagSafe charging and Thunderbolt ports.

Budget-Friendly Option

Families seeking a more affordable option may wish to consider the Apple MacBook Neo. 

  • 8GB RAM
  • 256GB SSD storage

The Neo is well suited to everyday school tasks including web browsing, research, Microsoft Office applications, email, online learning, and media consumption. It provides an excellent entry point into the Apple ecosystem at a lower purchase price.

Students intending to study subjects involving more demanding software, such as media production, digital technologies, coding, music production or graphic design, may benefit from the additional performance and features of the MacBook Air.

Windows Devices

Windows laptops are also accepted if they better suit your family’s preference or budget. While our support resources are primarily designed around macOS, we are able to accommodate Windows devices for general classroom use.

Devices are available from major retailers such as Officeworks and JB Hi-Fi, or through our partner supplier, the ASI School Device Program.

School Card Device Program

Beginning in 2025, Woodville High School partnered with the Department for Education to provide students eligible for School Card with a laptop in Year 7 and Year 10.

This initiative is part of the Department’s 2023–2026 Digital Strategy, which focuses on improving equality, access, and the quality of digital learning resources.

When your School Card application is approved, our Finance Team will notify the IT Department, and they will organise a device for your child at no cost.

If you believe you are eligible, please apply for School Card in January each year.

Daily Laptop Borrowing

Students who do not have access to a personal device may borrow a school laptop for the day between 8:00 AM and 3:10 PM.
Devices must be returned before leaving school and cannot be taken home.

This option supports students and families where affordability may be a concern.

Software

Woodville High School uses Google Apps for Education.

If you choose to buy a MacBook, below is a list of software that comes pre-installed and ready to use. Students will receive access on their first day, and additional programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other required tools are provided by the school as needed. No extra purchases are required while your child is enrolled.

FAQ’s

What if my child’s device is damaged?

AppleCare+ for MacBook extends your coverage to three years from your AppleCare+ purchase date and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $149 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $429 for other damage. In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts via chat or phone.

AppleCare+ benefits are in addition to any legal rights provided by Australian consumer law.

Where can I find a cheaper Macbook?

If you are looking for a second hand MacBook or sub $1000 then we can suggest a couple of sites that may be useful.

​​Alternatively, families can elect to enter into the school owned device scheme. These devices are borrowed daily and returned to the Learning Hub prior to students leaving the school.

Can I use an alternative Device

An Apple device is recommended but not mandatory. Your child will find that most devices around our school are Apple, all teachers use these devices and in computer rooms/labs they are used. 

Most software is compatible on both Windows and Apple platforms so there is no disadvantage to buying a PC. If a teacher wanted students to use a specific product that is Apple only e.g iMovie, GarageBand etc then they would book a computer lab to do that. 

Can devices be charged at school?

Under Department for Education guidelines your child cannot charge their laptop at school unless it is electrically tested. We do not electrically test for those other than in Year 12 and approved by the Senior Leader. Please ensure that the device you purchase can hold a charge for the whole day. 

Middle Years

Senior Years

The journey from Year 10 to 12 is an exciting one for every young person and we feel very honoured to be part of it with you. We believe that the journey should be one that is enriching, inspiring and where every senior school student will cultivate the capabilities, skills and dispositions that will enable them to thrive as they navigate an ever-changing world.

Special Interest Music

Woodville High School is a designated Special Interest Music Centre. The Music Centre offers a wide range of specialist music courses to cater for the varied needs of its student population.
