Governing Council
At Woodville High School the Governing Council has a strong partnership with the Principal in leading the development and implementation
of the new Strategic Plan titled Towards 2030: Our Future, Our Place, Our Woodville.
Strategic Plan and the Governing Council
The 2024-2026 Strategic Plan was co-designed with students, staff and families and outlines a clear vision for the school, one that holds true to the school’s 110 years of history and rich traditions.
The Strategic Plan is our anchor point to drive improvement, innovation, and renewal in each of our four aspirational constellations for excellence and equity, while holding tight on our core values and our purpose. It was designed to promote innovation, excellence, diversity, inclusivity, collaboration, authenticity, inquiry and enrichment. This Strategic Plan differs from others as it draws on our history and purpose outlined in our motto Ad Astra per Aspera, the golden thread throughout our history that will lead us to the future that we aspire to. Ultimately, the role of the Governing Council is to provide advice to the Principal with the goal of strengthening and supporting public education in the community.
The Governing Council at Woodville High School meets twice a term and works together with the Principal to develop and monitor the strategic direction of the school. It is highly regarded and recognised for its pro-active involvement in the educational advocacy and achievements of the school. Its many sub-committees provide support and direction for a range of school activities, including finance, asset management, policy development and strategic directions.
In their role on the School Governing Council, members work with the Principal to:
- Engage with the local community
- Develop and approve local policies
- Ensuring that the cultural and social diversity of the community is considered and valued
- Set the broad strategic direction, vision and mission of the school
- Monitor and review the 2024-2026 Strategic Plan
- Be the employing authority of some services, including the canteen.
The School Council comprises twelve parent members who each serve a term of two years. Prior to the WHS Annual General Meeting, parents are invited to nominate for a position on the School Governing Council. Staff and student representatives are elected annually to hold positions on the Council for a one year period. The applications are presented at the AGM, after which the positions are decided by a vote of the parent attendees at the meeting. The selection process considers the skills and experience that best meet the needs of the School Governing Council. All parents are invited to attend the AGM and are eligible to vote for the School Council members.
